Context
Yongsan History Museum, dedicated to the district’s unique past, was preparing for its 2022 opening. Yongsan has witnessed pivotal moments in Korean history from the Joseon Dynasty to the present, making the creation of a space to systematically preserve and share this legacy a pressing need. Ahead of its opening, the museum aimed to produce content that could serve both as in-house screening material and as marketing-ready video. Particularly noteworthy was that the museum building itself is a historic structure embodying Yongsan’s story, making the seamless visual integration of the architecture and its history a central priority.
Challenge
The primary challenge was to seamlessly unite two seemingly opposing goals, educational and promotional, within a single video. The educational aspect required the accurate, systematic delivery of historical information, while the promotional aspect called for emotionally engaging and visually compelling storytelling. Balancing the complexity of Yongsan’s history was equally critical. On the technical side, achieving visual cohesion meant harmonizing motion graphics with live-action footage while preserving the distinctive character of the museum’s historic building.
Solution
We built visual language where history and present naturally meet by adding actual building cinematography to motion graphics-centered video production. We implemented Yongsan's historical transformation through motion graphics while connecting how traces of each era are preserved and reinterpreted in the current museum building through actual filming. We carefully designed narrative structure so educational information delivery and emotional appeal wouldn't conflict, and created modular composition allowing various editing versions to optimize for both in-museum screening and marketing use.
