   The exhibition space was planned as an open place of journey where visitors can stroll and view the works.

   “먼저 저희는 일단 전시장을 이렇게 좀 하나의 여행의 장소? 그걸 만들고 싶었어요. 우리에게 익숙한 어떤 환경을 조금 다른 식으로 보여주기 위해서 굉장히 오픈된 공간을 만들고 거기서 사람들이 약간은 걸어 다니면서 전시를 관람하는 게 가장 중요하지 않을까 생각을 해서 그렇게 계획을 짰습니다.” — Nana

   The exhibition title 'All Things Fall Apart' represents the biological process of living matter falling apart as well as Seoul constantly rebuilding itself.

   “It's nice because the title can be understood in many different ways. And it's uh, biological or like it's a biological process of all living matter falling apart. But it's also true for a city, especially Seoul, that keeps on like regenerating and falling apart and rebuilding itself. So that's what we were looking for with the title.” — Felix

   The work 'Camera, Cigarette, Whiskey, and Our Father, who Art in Heaven' consists of ~200 collected discarded frames, with 80% original photos by artists and 20% intact found contents.

   “어, 이 작업은 어, 총 200여 점으로 이루어진 사진 액자 작업이고요. 저희가 이제 길거리를 돌아다니면서 버려진 액자들을 하나하나 수거하고, 어, 전체 액자는 모두 저희가 주워 온 거고, 80% 정도는 저희가 찍은 사진, 그리고 나머지 20% 정도는 어, 안에 내용물이 있는 상태로 버려진 사진들인데요. 결혼식 사진 혹은 뭐, 돌 사진, 가족 사진, 어, 종교적인 이제 문구가 들어가 있는 것들로 이루어져 있습니다.” — Nana

   The artwork 'Stream Line' captured videos and audio along streams to portray the controlled flood prevention structures and nature.

   “하천이 이제 만들어진 게 아무래도 이제 홍수가 범람할 때, 도시가 완전히 잠기지 않게 이렇게 만드는 구조인데, 뭔가 이렇게 자연과 어, 계획된 통제, 그런 어떤 구조 자체가 저희한테는 굉장히 아름답게 다가왔어요. 그래서 하천들을 따라서 영상으로 담고 또 사운드도 수집하듯이 저희가 녹음한 거예요. 하천가에서. 그래서, 네.” — Nana

   The work 'Home Sick' follows the map of Seoul in drawings, creating an imagined reality where only buildings remain.

   “향수병 같은 경우에는 서울을 크게 봤을 때 서울의 지도를 이제 따라서 드로잉으로 표현을 한 건데요. 이제 아무래도 아, 계속해서 건물이 올라오면서 더 이상 아무것도 없고, 건물만 남아 있는 그런 어떤 가상의 현실을 한번 만들어 봤습니다.” — Nana

In this session, I would like to introduce the exhibition by the artist duo Nana and Felix, winners of the 6th POSCO Art Museum Emerging Artists Competition. The landscape of the city and our current lives recorded by Nana and Felix, "All Things Fall Apart". Let's meet them right now.

   안녕하세요. 아나운서 정주희입니다. 포스코미술관 랜선 아트 투어, 그 여덟 번째 시간. 이번 시간에는 제6회 포스코미술관 신진작가 공모전 수상작인 아티스트 듀오, 나나와 펠릭스 전시를 소개해 드리고자 하는데요. 나나와 펠릭스가 기록한 도시와 또 현재의 우리 삶의 풍경, 모든 것은 무너진다. 지금부터 만나보겠습니다.

   by the way, congratulation on winning the prize, I am curious to know how you entered the competition in the first place.

   이번에 상 받으시게 된 거 너무 축하드리고, 이번에 참여하게 되신 계기가 일단 어떻게 되시는지 궁금합니다.

    As artists, we constantly look for different opportunities, and POSCO Art Museum offered a great opportunity, so that is why we applied.

    작가로서 이제 많은 기회를 찾아다니는데요. 예. 포스코미술관에서 좋은 상을 받을 수 있는 기회가 있어서 공모하게 되었습니다.

    At the same time, we thought it could be a perfect chance to show our recently completed project that we've been working on since 5-6 years ago.

    Extremely honoured. It feels weird and very nice.

    Indeed honoured, to be honest we didn't expect the prize. there are so many good artists in South Korea, so...

    네, 굉장히 굉장히 영광이고, 약간 좀 솔직히 그렇게 막 크게 예상하고 뭐 이런 건 아니었고요. 워낙, 워낙 우리나라에 너무 잘하시는 작가분들이 너무 많아서

    Then, what was the most important element when you prepared the exhibition?

    그러면 혹시 이번 전시를 준비하면서 가장 중요하게 생각했던 부분이 따로 있으실까요?

    Well, we wanted to turn the exhibition space into a journey. our initial plan was to present a familiar environment from slightly different perspective, so we decided to open up the space completely, and designed the installation plan where visitors can stroll and look around, we thought that was the most important thing.

    먼저 저희는 일단 전시장을 이렇게 좀 하나의 여행의 장소? 그걸 만들고 싶었어요. 우리에게 익숙한 어떤 환경을 조금 다른 식으로 보여주기 위해서 굉장히 오픈된 공간을 만들고 거기서 사람들이 약간은 걸어 다니면서 전시를 관람하는 게 가장 중요하지 않을까 생각을 해서 그렇게 계획을 짰습니다.

    Right, just like you mentioned, I felt like I was traveling when i was in the exhibition.

    저도 지금 작가님이 얘기해 주신 것처럼 이번 전시를 보면서 뭔가 여행하는 기분이다 이런 생각이 들었는데요.

    Well, so could you tell us about the exhibition title <All Things Fall Apart>?

    그럼 특히 <모든 것은 무너진다>에는 어떤 이야기가 담겨 있나요?

    Felix

    It's nice because the title can be understood in many different ways. And it's uh, biological or like it's a biological process of all living matter falling apart. But it's also true for a city, especially Seoul, that keeps on like regenerating and falling apart and rebuilding itself. So that's what we were looking for with the title.

    제목이 여러 다른 의미로 해석될 수 있어서 저는 좋다고 생각해요. 먼저 모든 생명체는 사라져버리는 생물학적 과정을 표현한다고 생각할 수 있고요. 또 한편으로는 도시도 마찬가지죠. 특히 서울과 같이 끊임없이 재생산되는, 스스로 무너지고 재건축되는 도시, 그런 점들을 전시를 정할 때 염두에 두었어요.

    Amongst the artworks, I found <Camera, Cigarette, Whiskey, and Our Father, who Art in Heaven> very interesting. I have learnt that for the last several years, you have been collecting discarded frames and taking photographs from different neighborhoods.

    제가 봤던 것 중에 <카메라, 담배, 위스키 그리고 하늘에 계신 우리 아버지> 작품이 되게 인상 깊은데, 그 그동안 계속 서울 곳곳 동네를 다니면서 계속 이제 사진을 찍고 또 버린 액자들을 수집을 하셨다고 제가 이제 찾아보았어요.

    Can you tell us more about the work?

    The work consists of about 200 framed photographs. We have walked in a lot of different neighbourhoods and collected frames that we found discarded on the street. Every single frame in the work is collected from the street, 80% of the content are photographs that we have taken, and the rest, 20%, are as we found the frames, with the original content intact. These contents vary, from photos of weddings, baby showers, family portraits, religious icons etc.

    어, 이 작업은 어, 총 200여 점으로 이루어진 사진 액자 작업이고요. 저희가 이제 길거리를 돌아다니면서 버려진 액자들을 하나하나 수거하고, 어, 전체 액자는 모두 저희가 주워 온 거고, 80% 정도는 저희가 찍은 사진, 그리고 나머지 20% 정도는 어, 안에 내용물이 있는 상태로 버려진 사진들인데요. 결혼식 사진 혹은 뭐, 돌 사진, 가족 사진, 어, 종교적인 이제 문구가 들어가 있는 것들로 이루어져 있습니다.

    Do you have any funny story to share about the process?

    그렇게 하면서 굉장히 에피소드들도 있었을 것 같은데,

    Well, we made apartment guards very happy when we go frame hunting. Thank you so much for getting rid of the rubbish. So today we have this trash, please take it. I think most people must find the frame disposal very tricky. Yes, most of the times, frames are just thrown away on the street.

    액자들을 수거하러 가면 경비원 아저씨들이 너무 좋아하셨어요. 쓰레기를 수거해 주셔서 고맙습니다. (웃음) 그래서 네, 오늘 여기 이거 여기 있으니까 좀 가져가라고. (웃음) 네, 이렇게 대부분 많은 분들이 음, 약간 분리수거를 액자를 분리수거하는 데에 대해서 굉장히 어려움을 느끼시는 것 같아요. 그래서 대부분 약간 조금 그냥 버리는 경우가 굉장히 많아서, 네.

    Moving on, there is also another work that caught my eye, <Stream Line>. What does the work <Stream Line> convey?

    그러면 이번 전시에서 또 저는 깊게 눈여겨본 게 <하천가>예요. 이 <하천가>는 어떤 의미가 좀 담겨 있나요?

    The main reason for building the structures along and around the streams and rivers is to prevent the city from flooding during the rainy season. To us, these structures, existing as they are in between nature and the planned, controlled environment felt very beautiful. So we documented the scenery along the river in video and also collected pieces of the scenery in audio by recording different sounds.

    하천이 이제 만들어진 게 아무래도 이제 홍수가 범람할 때, 도시가 완전히 잠기지 않게 이렇게 만드는 구조인데, 뭔가 이렇게 자연과 어, 계획된 통제, 그런 어떤 구조 자체가 저희한테는 굉장히 아름답게 다가왔어요. 그래서 하천들을 따라서 영상으로 담고 또 사운드도 수집하듯이 저희가 녹음한 거예요. 하천가에서. 그래서, 네.

    Especially for Felix, you must miss Finland since you are living in South Korea. Can you tell us about your homesickness and also about the work <Home Sick>, please.

    아, 특히 이제 Felix 같은 경우에는 지금 한국에 있다 보니까 핀란드가 그리울 거 같은데 혹시 향수병에 대한 건 없는지 이야기해 주시면서 <향수병> 작품도 소개 한번 부탁드리도록 하겠습니다.

    We are always a bit homesick. Because it doesn't really matter uh, if we're in Finland, we're homesick to uh Korea, because we're in the wrong place. Kind of. And if we are uh in Korea, we are uh away from Finland so... So you always have have half of the family and half of the life in the in the on on the other side of the world.

    우리는 언제가는 조금은 향수에 젖어있다고 할 수 있어요. 왜냐하면 결국 어디 있든, 핀란드에 있다면 한국이 그리운 거죠. 또 다르게 말하자면, 우리는 항상 엉뚱한 장소에 있는 것이니까요. 그리고 우리가 한국에 있으면, 또 한편으로는 핀란드와 멀리 있는 것이고.. 우리가 지금 우리 가족과 같이 있지만 그건 절반일 뿐이고, 다른 반쪽은 지구 반대쪽에 있으니까요.

    The work, Home Sick, is a set of drawings that roughly follow the map of Seoul. The work depicts an imagined reality where buildings have been continuously rising, and there is nothing left but only buildings.

    향수병 같은 경우에는 서울을 크게 봤을 때 서울의 지도를 이제 따라서 드로잉으로 표현을 한 건데요. 이제 아무래도 아, 계속해서 건물이 올라오면서 더 이상 아무것도 없고, 건물만 남아 있는 그런 어떤 가상의 현실을 한번 만들어 봤습니다.

    Among other works, I noticed a curious piece about a certificate of ownership of real estate on the moon. I was looking at that, and thinking if this is genuine...

    근데, 또 신기했던 것이 여기에 있는 작품 중에 부동산 토지 증서가 있더라고요. 이걸 보면서 꼭 물어보고 싶은 게 '이게 진짜냐'

    It is real, and we bought one hectare of moon-land, somewhere that I do not remember the address now. Anyhow we bought some land.

    아, 네. (웃음) 아, 저희가 이제 1헥타르의 어떤 달의 지금 저희 주소를 기억이 안 나는데요. 어떤 부분을 사긴 했는데,

    Nana

    But when we humans talk of land or house, it no longer means home, but an investment. So we started joking that one day we might be able to own a home if we buy a land on the moon. So we bought a piece of the moon to reflect on the way homes are bought and traded as instruments of financial investment, as opposed to homes.

    더 이상 우리가 말하는 집이라는 거는 어떤 고향 그런 집이 아니라 인간으로서 다들 투자 가치로 생각을 하잖아요? 그래서 반대로 그러면 한번 달 나라의 땅이라도 한번 사놓으면 나중에 살 수 있지 않을까라는 어떤 일종의 농담 식으로 시작을 한 건데요. 자 저희는 그런 집이나 땅의 투자 가치를 생각하면서 한번 사봤습니다.

    Including myself, everyone who come to see the show would want to know, how much is it? How much did we pay?

    저도 그렇고 이곳 전시를 보러 와 주신 분들도 다 같은 생각일 것 같은데, 그건 얼마인가요?

    We paid more in postage fees. Yeah, that's the thing. I think it was like around 30 dollars.

    우표 요금이 더 나왔던 것 같은데. 제 기억엔 30달러 정도 됐던 것 같아요.

    We bought 1 hectare of moon land, but it is worth only 30 dollars.

    달 토지가 1헥타르 정도를 샀는데 그게 한 30달러밖에 안 되네요. (웃음)

    Such a special home on moon, now you own a place to reside. And maybe for that reason, you must be conveying a special meaning about apartments in your work and how do you feel about them?

    정말 특별한 '달의 집' 거주할 곳을 얻으셨는데, 그래서 그런지 이 서울에 있는 뭐 대도시에 있는 아파트들에 대한 특별한 또 의미가 왠지 여기 작가님들께서는 담겨져 있을 것 같은데 어떤 의미로 이렇게 느끼시나요?

    Nana

    It is certainly interesting but also very oppressing as apartments are not only in Seoul but throughout the country. And we think of the scenery as a whole, of certain aesthetics from the scenery and the aesthetic standards.

    흥미로우면서도 굉장히 억압적이기도 하고 서울뿐만이 아니고 전 국토가 다 이제 아파트잖아요. 그리고 전체적으로 봤을 때 보이는 풍경. 풍경에서 만들어지는 어떤 미, 미적 기준 그런 것들을 많이 생각하게 되죠.

    To our POSCO family, and the visitors who come to the show, can you tell us how to look at and understand the exhibition, according to your intentions?

    네, 우리 포스코 가족분들 그리고 이곳에 전시를 와주시는 분들에게 이 작품을 어떻게 바라봐줬으면 좋겠다 하는 그런 함축적인 의미가 있다면 카메라 보고 또 한마디 부탁드리도록 하겠습니다.

    We don't want to say how the works should be looked at, in this or that way, but we would like you to feel how the work comes to you when you face it.

    어 저희가 어 작품을 이제 보러 오시는 분들께 이렇게 보시라고 저희가 이제 어 말씀을 드릴 수는 없고요. 작품 대하시면서 마주하시면서 작품이 어떻게 본인에게 다가오는지 그걸 느끼셨으면 좋겠습니다.

    The POSCO Emerging Artists Competition, ongoing since 2014, is a patronage activity discovering and supporting emerging talents in the art world, supporting talented young artists in holding solo exhibitions.

    2014년부터 이어지고 있는 포스코 신진작가 공모전 예술계의 신진 작가들을 발굴 및 지원하는 메세나 활동으로 실력 있는 젊은 작가의 개인전 개최를 지원합니다.
